The Abuhav Synagogue is one of the most magnificent synagogues in Tzfat, named after Rabbi Yitzchak Abuhav, a 15th century Spanish Kabbalist. According to tradition, the synagogue was built according to Kabbalistic principles, with its structure corresponding to various mystical concepts. The synagogue houses a famous Torah scroll attributed to Rabbi Abuhav himself, which is brought out only three times a year: Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, and Shavuot. Remarkably, when a devastating earthquake struck Tzfat in 1837, the wall containing this Torah scroll was the only part of the building left standing.
