The Yosef Caro Synagogue, also known as the Beit Yosef Synagogue, is built on the site where Rabbi Yosef Karo — author of the Shulchan Aruch, the definitive code of Jewish law — lived and taught. Rabbi Karo arrived in Tzfat in 1535 and remained here until his death in 1575, during which time he composed both the Beit Yosef commentary and the Shulchan Aruch. The synagogue preserves the spiritual atmosphere of this great legal and mystical authority whose rulings continue to govern Jewish life worldwide.
