Neighbours and shuls
Community & minyanim
Tzfat is a small city with many Jewish communities side by side. Here is how to find your minyan, your neighbours and the English-speaking community.

A city of many communities
Long-established Sephardi families, many of Moroccan and Tunisian origin; Chassidic and non-Chassidic Ashkenazi communities; a large Chabad community centred in Canaan; Breslov communities in the Old City and beyond; and national-religious families. Many shuls carry the name of the community that founded them and welcome everyone today.
Finding your minyan
Our Synagogues directory lists Tzfat's shuls with their nusach, neighbourhood and photos. The quickest way to settle in is still to walk into the nearest shul, daven, and ask the gabbai about times and shiurim.
The English-speaking community
English speakers have made Tzfat their home since the 1960s. The community runs its own library, charities and email lists, and the Tzfat Chevre Facebook group is where English speakers of every background share practical information, from apartments to plumbers.
Chesed and gemachim
Like every Jewish community, Tzfat lives on chesed. Gemachim lend everything from baby equipment to simcha items; ask your shul or neighbours, or look in the Gemachs section of our community classifieds. Shabbat hospitality is part of the city's life — don't hesitate to ask, or to offer.
Choosing a neighbourhood
Each neighbourhood has its own character and mix of communities. Many families rent first, spend a few Shabbatot in different shuls, and then decide where to buy.
