Rabbi Avraham Dov of Avritch (c. 1760–1840), known as the Bat Ayin after his book, was a Hasidic master and a student of the Chernobyl rebbes and of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev. After some forty years as rabbi of Avritch (Ovruch), he settled in Tzfat in 1831 and led its Hasidic community through the revolt of 1834, the great earthquake of 1837 and the epidemic of 1840. He died on 12 Kislev 5601 (1840) and is buried in Tzfat’s Old Cemetery, near the grave of the author of Arvei Nachal.
The hillula. Every year on 12 Kislev, people gather at the kever for Torah study and prayer, and many hold a “Bat Ayin meal” in his memory. In 5787 the hillula falls on Motzei Shabbat, 12 Kislev (21 November 2026).
His beit midrash, the Avritch (Bat Ayin) Synagogue, still stands in the Old City; see its listing on this site. For his life, the full text of Bat Ayin and hillula details, visit bat-ain.info.
